BALANTIDIASIS

BALANTIDIASIS

INTRODUCTION

You must have been wondering what balantidiasis is, calm your nerves cause am going to make you know what it really is.
Balantidiasis is a name given to a large intestinal infection caused by balantidium coli. Balantidium coli is a ciliated protozoan which belongs to the Phylum Ciliophora under Sub-kingdom Protozoa, it is a Unicellular Organism though, but it's functionally equivalent to other multicellular organisms.

TRANSMISSION

Balantidiasis can be contacted through eating food or drinking water that has been contaminated by Balantidium Coli.
Balantidium Coli exists in two Forms Namely

CAPSULED FORM

This is the immobile form of Balantidium coli which exists outside the Human body, it has a thick protective wall around it.

DISEASE PRODUCING FORM (TROPHOZOITE)

The Trophozoite is a mobile form of B.coli, though capable of moving, it can't survive once excreted in feaces and therefore can't infect others. In the Digestive tract, the cysts are transported to the intestine where the protective walls of the cysts are broken up by digestive secretions thereby releasing the mobile trophozoites. Once released within the intestine, the trophozoites multiply by feeding on intestinal bacterial or by invading the lining of the large intestine. Within the lining of the large intestine, the trophozoites secrete a substance that destroys intestinal tissues and create sores (Ulcers) or abscesses.

Trophozoites eventually form new cysts that are carried through the digestive tract and excreted in feaces. Under favourable temperature and humidity condition, the cysts can survive in soil or water for weeks to months, ready to begin the lifecycle again.

Individuals with Balantidiasis have no conspicous symtomps, these infected individuals may not feel ill, however they are still capable of infecting others with the disease by Person to Person contact or by contaminating food or water with cysts that others may ingest, For Example, preparing food with an unwashed hands.

Balantidiasis can easily be prevented by maintaining a High standard of personal hygiene, and if you feel you have it, Consult your Medical Doctor for proper diagnosis and medications.
